Addiction Defined

How addiction works…

DOPAMINE is a brain chemical that creates feelings of pleasure.

Drugs flood your brain with synthetic or "fake" dopamine. This creates a euphoric high.

Your brain gets used to the "fake" dopamine, so it
starts producing less & doesn't have as much of an
impact on the brain's reward system.

A person continues to use drugs, trying to restore the dopamine levels & get that
euphoric feeling again.

However, now a larger amount is needed and a person can become dependent &
powerless to not repeat the behavior.
