Anorexia nervosa is characterized by extreme food restriction and an intense fear of gaining weight.
People with this disorder often see themselves as overweight, even when they are not. This can lead to severe malnutrition and other health issues.
Bulimia nervosa involves cycles of binge eating (eating large amounts beyond the point of feeling full) followed by purging behaviors, such as vomiting, laxative use, or excessive exercise, in order to prevent weight gain.
People with bulimia may feel a lack of control during binges and often feel ashamed or guilty afterward.
Binge-eating disorder is marked by regular episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period, beyond the point of feeling full.
Unlike bulimia, binge eating is not followed by purging, leading to feelings of guilt and distress, and often resulting in weight gain.
ARFID involves eating very little food due to a lack of interest in eating, avoiding certain textures or colors, or fear of choking or vomiting.
This can lead to nutritional deficiencies and weight loss but is not related to body image concerns.
Orthorexia is an obsession with eating foods that the person considers healthy. This obsession can lead to restrictive eating patterns and nutritional deficiencies, impacting overall health and well-being.
